80s fashion is experiencing a renaissance, and with it comes the return of the popular perm. If curls sound appealing to you, but you have naturally straight hair, the classic perm could be the solution. Almost any hair type can be transformed into voluminous curls – provided you know what you're doing and have an experienced hairstylist on your side. In today's post, we'll tell you how the perm originated, what types of perms there are, and everything else you need to know about this hair trend.

perm

What is a perm?

A perm intensifies the hair's natural wave. This means that a new hair structure is created through chemical treatment, which provides more volume. Using a special chemically formulated perm solution, the hair structures are first opened, essentially broken up, and then transformed into a new, curly shape. Once the desired texture has been achieved through curling, the curls are permanently stabilized with a chemical fixative. The curl size can vary. The 80s trend of small ringlets is particularly popular.

How did the perm come about?

The permanent wave has a fascinating history dating back to the 19th century. German hairdresser Karl Nessler is considered the inventor of the first permanent wave. In 1905, he developed a method for permanently curling hair by wrapping hair around metal rods and using a chemical based on borax and sulfur to alter the hair structure. Although Nessler's early perms often produced unpleasant chemical fumes and severely damaged hair, they laid the foundation for the modern perm treatment, which has been further developed and improved over time.

Who is a perm suitable for?

In principle, anyone can wear a perm. However, the hair should be healthy. Regardless of whether the hair is natural or colored, a perm can be combined with a variety of styles. In terms of hair texture, a perm can be used on both straight and wavy hair—even very curly hair can benefit from a perm, as it can add texture.

Important: 14 days must pass between coloring and perming! Furthermore, if your hair is heavily bleached, you should ensure sufficient time between treatments to avoid further stressing the structure.

At what hair length is a perm possible?

The curlers work well on hair that's about 10 centimeters long or longer. However, if your hair is too long, only gentle waves are possible, as the weight of the hair can cause the curls to stretch.

What types of perms are there?

When it comes to permanent waves, a distinction is also made between alkaline and acidic permanent waves, each of which uses different chemicals and processes.

Alkaline perm

The alkaline perm is a traditional method that uses an ammonia-based solution to open the hair structure and create curls. This type of perm typically creates highly defined curls or waves and is especially suitable for people with hair that is difficult to curl.

Special features:

  • Use of ammonia-containing solution
  • Opens the hair structure to form curls

Advantages:

  • Strongly defined curls or waves
  • Suitable for unruly hair

Risks:

  • Can put more strain on the hair and cause damage
  • May require intensive care to maintain hair health

Acid perm

The acid perm uses a milder acid solution to alter the hair structure and create curls or waves. This type of perm is gentler on the hair and is especially suitable for fine or delicate hair.

Special features:

  • Use of acid solution
  • Gentler for the hair

Advantages:

  • Less damaging to hair
  • Suitable for fine or sensitive hair

Risks:

  • Possibly less long-lasting results than with alkaline perm
  • Curls may be less defined

Choosing between an alkaline and an acidic perm depends on your hair type, personal preferences, and desired results. An experienced hairstylist can help you make the right choice and ensure your locks look healthy and beautiful.

Conclusion: The acid perm is stronger and suitable even for thick and unruly hair, creating curls in just 15 minutes. For fine, damaged, or previously treated hair, the cold perm is more suitable because of its gentler composition. However, it also requires a longer exposure time and heat, which is automatically generated with modern methods.

Perm step by step instructions

Below we would like to explain to you step by step how the perm is created.

Step 1.

Hair unprocessed and dry Hair is unprocessed and dry

Step 2.

The hair is washed thoroughly at the beginning First, wash your hair thoroughly with a cleansing shampoo

Step 3.

A precise cut is then made and comb it gently . Next, the hair is treated with the Delavi perm pre-treatment, ideally distributed evenly using a spray. This pre-treatment is applied before all alkaline hair treatments.

Step 4.

Comair lace paper and perm rollers

Now the hair is wound onto the appropriate curlers to achieve the desired curling result

Hands turn the winder in the direction of the head
Wrap the tip paper around the ends of your hair and roll it up neatly. Turn the curler toward your head with your hands.

Secure the curlers. Start with the delicate strands around your face, then continue with the top hair, working your way down strand by strand.

Step 5.

Apply the skin protection cream below your hairline and protect the area around your hairline with cotton wool. This will prevent chemicals from coming into contact with your skin.

Step 6.

The perm solution is then applied evenly to the wrapped strands and left on for about 20 minutes without heat. For this process, we use Goldwell Vitensity Well Lotion No. 0 – for natural hair that's difficult to perm.

To keep an eye on the exposure time, we use the Comair short-term timer, which comes in classic black and can be easily attached to the wall.

Step 7.

After the perm solution has been applied and the desired processing time has been reached, the next step is to thoroughly rinse the solution. This process is crucial to ensure that all chemical residues are thoroughly removed. Rinsing is typically done under running water, with the hairstylist ensuring that each strand is evenly rinsed. This not only helps eliminate excess chemicals but also ensures that the hair remains clean and healthy after the perm.

During rinsing, special attention is paid to the roots and tips to ensure that no residue remains in these delicate areas.

Rinse well with water

After the perm solution has been thoroughly rinsed out, the hair is carefully dried. This drying process is crucial for setting the structure of the newly created curls and ensuring a perfect perm result.

Step 8.

After the perm solution has been rinsed out, the next necessary step is to stabilize and shape the curls for a lasting hold. This is done using a fixative such as Goldwell Vitensity Gloss Care Fix .

This product is applied to the newly styled curls and stabilizes the hair structure, allowing the curls to retain their shape for longer.

Mix Goldwell Gloss Care Fix 1:1 with lukewarm water in a small bowl in a ratio of 1:1.

This process is performed twice.

In the first stage of the fixing process, Goldwell Vitensity Gloss Care Fix is applied twice. Two-thirds of the fixative is applied to the still-coiled hair for a period of five minutes. This application of the fixative ensures a comprehensive and efficient hold of the curls.

It supports the strengthening of the newly formed shape and protects the hair structure. The separate application times for each treatment allow for precise control of the setting process, helping to achieve optimal results without over-stressing the hair.

Step 9 .

After Goldwell Vitensity Gloss Care Fix has stabilized the curls, the curlers are carefully removed. To ensure that the carefully formed curls retain their intended structure, this process requires precise handling, and the curls are then re-set with the remaining fixation, leaving an additional 3-5 minutes.

The hair is then thoroughly washed to remove the fixative and any residue.

This thorough cleansing ensures that the curls are not only perfectly shaped but also free of excess products.

This intermediate step marks an important transition as it lays the foundation for the final phase of the perm, in which the hair takes on its final shape.

Carefully remove curlers.

Step 10 .

In the care phase after removing the curlers and washing your hair, the use of high-quality care products plays a crucial role, especially with perms.

Therefore, the next step is to apply a moisturizing product like Goldwell Dualsenses Curls & Waves Intensive Serum. This serum is specially formulated to intensify curls and waves while providing deep hydration.

Careful use of this serum not only helps keep curls smooth and defined, but also supports the overall health and shine of the hair.

This additional care measure underlines the commitment to comprehensive hair health and gives the freshly styled curls a well-groomed and attractive appearance.

Step 11 .

To complete the perm process, the newly created curls are styled and shaped with a diffuser. The diffuser is a special hairdryer attachment designed to gently disperse air, preserving the curls' natural texture and definition.

During styling, the diffuser is gently moved from the ends of the hair to the roots to ensure that the curls retain their desired shape and bounce.

To achieve a finished and professional look, this final styling phase is crucial. The diffuser reduces the risk of frizz and hair damage and allows for targeted curl styling.

This technique should be applied carefully to ensure that the curls are not only beautifully defined but also retain their structure and shape to have a long, attractive look.

How long does a perm last?

A professionally permed hair can last about three to five months, after which it's ideally time to re-perm it. If you don't want another perm, you can simply let it grow out, just like dyeing your hair. However, this is relatively time-consuming. Alternatively, you could smooth your hair again by straightening it with a flat iron.

How should I care for my hair after a perm?

After a perm, your hair shouldn't be washed or styled extensively for about three days to allow it to recover. Afterward, it's very easy to style. It looks great either when left to air dry or when blow-dried with a diffuser.

After the first week, there's not much to worry about when washing your hair. It's just important to keep your hair well-hydrated—so always use a conditioner or moisturizing leave-in product.

Note: If your hair isn't perfect one day, you can also touch up individual strands with a curling iron.

How much does a perm cost and where can you get one?

The price for a perm for women varies depending on hair length and typically ranges from €60 to €150. A more cost-effective alternative is to do it yourself. If you want to test whether curls suit you first, there are various tools and tricks for creating them temporarily. You can also find kits at drugstores that allow you to do a perm at home.

Do your own perms

As already mentioned, there are now practical kits available in drugstores that help you create a perm yourself. These kits include curlers, perming lotion, setting lotion, protective gloves, and conditioner.

First, you need to choose a curling style. Large rollers create waves, while small spiral rollers create corkscrew curls.

Remember: The larger the curler, the larger the wave—and vice versa! Just like at a salon, you can choose between two types of perms: the acid wave (for thick, untreated hair) or the alkaline or cold wave (for fine, delicate, pre-treated hair).

Here's how to proceed step by step:

  • Wash and comb your hair thoroughly. A Tangle Teezer works particularly well on wet hair.
  • Protect your clothing well, similar to when dyeing your hair, and wear a cape or old clothes. Use a cream (e.g., Vaseline) to protect your skin from chemicals.
  • Wrap the curlers in your hair. If a curler doesn't fit properly, start over!
  • Start around the face and work towards the back of the head. It's advisable to ask a friend for help.
  • Make sure the ends are completely wrapped and secure the curlers with an elastic band
  • Apply the curl lotion or perm liquid generously and cover all hair with it
  • Leave the lotion on according to the instructions and do not exceed/undergo the recommended application time to avoid hair damage or too few curls
  • Rinse out the perm lotion thoroughly and then apply the setting lotion.
  • Use about two-thirds of the bottle
  • After the fixing lotion has taken effect, remove the curlers and massage the rest of the fixing lotion into your hair
  • Rinse them immediately afterwards
  • Care for them directly with a conditioner
  • Do not wash your hair for the next few days to protect it from drying out and to preserve its new structure.

What types of perms are there?

There are numerous perm styles you can achieve with this traditional trend. Here are some inspirations:

  • Classic perm
  • The classic perm is probably the most well-known type of perm. This involves creating small curls or waves in the hair that remain in place until the hair grows back. This type of perm is particularly suitable for people with fine or straight hair, as it adds volume and texture.

  • Volume perm
  • If you're looking for more volume and body in your hair, then a volume perm is perfect for you. This type of perm creates larger curls that give the hair more volume and movement. This type of perm is especially suitable for people with thin or fine hair, as it adds body without weighing it down.

  • Beach Waves
  • Are you longing for a relaxed, summery look? Then beach waves are just what you need! This type of perm creates large, loose waves reminiscent of a day at the beach. Beach waves are perfect for people who love a casual and relaxed look and want to bring a bit of vacation feeling into their everyday life.

  • Spiral perm
  • For those who prefer something a little more extravagant, the spiral perm is the ideal choice. With this type of perm, the hair is curled into tight, spiral curls, giving the hair a beautiful, defined texture. This type of perm is perfect for people with long hair who love a striking and feminine look.

  • Afro perm
  • The Afro perm is perfect for those with naturally curly or frizzy hair who want to add definition and texture to their curls. This type of perm enhances and defines the natural curls or waves to create a beautiful, voluminous result.

No matter which type of perm you choose, it's important to consult with an experienced hairstylist to help you make the perfect choice for your hair. Proper care is also essential to keep your curls healthy and shiny.

    Perm for men

The perm is a classic procedure primarily associated with women's hairstyles. However, perms are becoming increasingly popular for men, especially among those seeking more volume, texture, and definition in their hair. Here are some key points to consider to determine if perming is a good option for men:

    • The hair type

Men with thin or fine hair may benefit from a perm, as it adds volume and fullness to their hair. Men with thicker or stronger hair, on the other hand, can use a perm to define and style curls or waves.

    • Hair length and style

Hair length and desired style are important factors when deciding on a perm. Shorter hair can be permed to add texture and volume, while longer hair can be styled with curls or waves.

    • Special needs

Men who exercise regularly or work in jobs where their hair is constantly in motion should keep in mind that a perm is a long-term change that requires some maintenance. It's important to ensure that the chosen hairstyle and care routine fit your lifestyle.

    • Advice from a specialist

Just like women, men are advised to consult a professional hairdresser who can assess their hair texture and type. An experienced hairdresser will also help you determine the right style and type of perm for your individual needs.

    • Care and styling

Men who choose a perm should be prepared to care for and style their hair accordingly. This may include using special products such as curl creams or sprays, as well as adjusting their hair care routine to properly maintain the curls or waves.

Overall, perming can be a viable option for men, especially those seeking more volume, texture, and definition in their hair. However, it's important to consider your individual hair needs and desired style, and consult a professional to make the best possible decision.

    Perm for short hair

If you have short hair and are considering a perm, there are a few things to keep in mind. Short hair weighs less than longer hair, which means the curls may be more intense with a perm than with longer hair.

It is also important that the hairdresser adjusts the size of the curls to the length of your hair to ensure that the result looks natural and optimally emphasizes your face shape, otherwise the perm can quickly appear too voluminous on short hair.

However, a perm for short hair can give you extra volume, especially if you have fine hair and texture, and can refresh your look.

    Perm for medium-length hair

Medium-length hair provides a great base for a perm because it has enough length to support different curl sizes and styles while being easy to style.

For medium-length hair, it would only be important to find the balance between curl size and hair length to achieve a harmonious and natural result.

A perm for medium-length hair will give you extra volume, texture, and movement without weighing your hair down, as can happen with long hair.

    Perm for long hair

Long hair offers endless possibilities for a stunning perm. However, there are a few special considerations to keep in mind.

Due to the weight, curls on longer hair may not last as long as on shorter hair and may pull out more quickly. Therefore, it's important that your stylist uses the right amount of solution and treats the hair carefully to achieve optimal results.

It's also advisable to maintain your curls regularly to keep them healthy and shiny. A perm for long hair can add impressive volume, movement, and dynamism, taking your look to a whole new level. But keep in mind that if your hair is too long, the perm won't hold properly, and you won't achieve the desired curl effect.

Get thorough advice from an experienced expert in advance.

    Perm for thin hair

If you have thin hair and are thinking about getting a perm, there are a few things to consider.

While a perm can add volume and texture to thin hair, it's important that the stylist uses the right amount of solution to avoid damaging the hair. Fine hair is quite susceptible to aggressive styling and is more prone to breakage, so caution is advised.

For thin hair, larger curls or waves can also be a good choice, as they give the hair more volume without looking artificial.

    Perm for thick hair

While thick hair doesn't necessarily require a perm to achieve voluminous volume, it can still benefit from a perm. It makes it easier to style and adds definition.

However, with thick hair, it is important that the hairdresser uses the right amount of solution to ensure that the curls do not become too heavy and do not pull the hair down.

    Perm with big curls

If you dream of lush, voluminous curls, then a perm with big curls is just what you need. Big curls can give your hair a rebellious, wild, yet glamorous look, making your look stand out.

However, when perming large curls, it is crucial that the hairdresser uses the correct size of curlers to achieve the desired curl size.

    Perm with small curls

Small curls can give your hair a beautiful, defined texture and make your look more feminine and playful. Small curls can look particularly good on medium-length hair and add a romantic touch to your look.

What curling techniques are there for perming?

There are different curling techniques for perming that can create different curl patterns and styles.

The most common wrapping techniques include:

    1. Spiral wrap = In this technique, the hair is wrapped around special spiral curlers to create tight, defined curls.
    2. Classic wrap = Here the hair is wrapped around classic curlers or papillotes to create smaller, even curls or waves
    3. Block wrap = With this technique, the hair is first divided into larger sections and wrapped around large rollers to create voluminous, natural curls
    4. Zig-zag curls = This technique creates irregular, textured curls by wrapping the hair around the curlers in a zig-zag pattern.

Choosing the right curling technique depends on your hair type, hair length, and desired curl pattern. An experienced hairstylist can advise you on the appropriate curling technique and is familiar with the different methods.

Can a perm cause hair loss?

Although this concern often arises, there is no reason to worry. A properly performed perm should generally not cause hair loss.

However, it's important to properly care for your hair before and after the perm process to minimize potential damage. An improperly performed perm process, such as excessive pulling on the hair, leaving the chemical solution on for too long, using aggressive styling products, coloring too quickly, etc., can stress your hair and lead to breakage or even hair loss.

Therefore, it would be wise to consult an experienced hairdresser who will carry out the perming process professionally and keep an eye on the health of your hair.

    Which hairstyles for a perm?

With a perm, you have numerous hairstyle options available to optimally showcase your curls.

    Some popular perm hairstyles are:

    • Loose waves

This relaxed and casual hairstyle is perfect for everyday wear and adds a romantic touch to your look.

    • Updos

With a perm, you can create beautiful updos that elegantly showcase your curls.

    • Half-up Half-down hairstyles

This hairstyle combines loose curls with a half-up part, creating a feminine and playful look.

    • Messy Bun

A casual bun is perfect for days when you want to keep your curls out of your face but still create a cool and casual style.

No matter what hairstyle you choose, a perm allows you to style your curls in a variety of ways and express your individual style.

Light perm vs. intensive perm - differences, advantages and disadvantages

When deciding on a perm, there are often two options to choose from: the light perm and the intensive perm.

It is important to understand the differences between the two to make the right choice for your hair.

    Light perm

A light perm is ideal for those who want a subtle curl effect that looks natural and isn't overly harsh on the hair. It uses a gentler formula that places less chemical stress on the hair. The curls are typically softer and more natural, creating a casual and effortless look.

    Advantages:

    • Natural looking curls
    • Lower risk of hair damage
    • Easier to care for and style
    • Suitable for people with fine or sensitive hair

    Disadvantages:

    • Curling effect may not last as long
    • Possibly less definition and structure than with an intensive perm

    Intensive perm

The intensive perm is ideal for those who want strong, defined curls that last longer and create a more dramatic effect. It uses a stronger formula that curls the hair deeper and more permanently. The curls are typically tighter and more defined, creating a striking and glamorous look.

    Advantages:

    • Long-lasting and defined curls
    • Stronger curl effect
    • Suitable for people with thick or resistant hair
    • Less frequent refreshers required

    Disadvantages:

    • Increased risk of hair damage if used improperly
    • May be more difficult to care for and style
    • Can lead to a greater change in hair structure

When choosing between a light and an intense perm, it is important to consider your hair texture, styling preferences and personal needs.

An experienced hairstylist can advise you on the right option and ensure your curls are healthy, beautiful, and perfectly tailored to your individual needs. This will help you choose the right perm (alkaline or acid perm).

What is the pH value of the perm solution?

The pH values of perm solutions can vary depending on the type of perm. Generally speaking, alkaline perm solutions have a pH in the alkaline range, typically between 9 and 11. This high pH helps open the outer layer of the hair, the cuticle, and alter the chemical bonds within the hair to create the desired curls or waves.

Acidic perm solutions have a lower pH, typically in the acidic range between 4.5 and 7. These acidic solutions are gentler on the hair and help lock in curls and close the hair structure to minimize damage.

    How often should I perm?

How often you should perm your hair depends on several factors, including your hair type, hair history, and personal preference.

In general, it is advisable to leave at least 3-5 months between perms to give the hair ample opportunity to recover and minimize potential damage.

Too frequent perms can damage your hair, leading to excessive dryness, breakage, and hair loss. It's important to pay attention to your hair's needs and seek professional advice from a stylist to ensure you find the right balance between styling and hair health.

    Can I undo the perm?

Yes, it is possible to reverse a perm, but the process can be time-consuming and challenging.

There are several methods for removing or relaxing a perm, including chemical treatments such as neutralizing with a reducing solution or mechanical methods such as flat ironing. However, it's important to note that undoing a perm can further stress the hair and cause damage.

It would therefore again be advisable to seek professional advice from an experienced hairdresser to ensure that the hair is stressed as little as possible during the process and remains healthy.

    Which materials for a perm?

When performing a perm, various materials are used to shape and secure the curls. The basic materials include:

    1. Rollers: Rollers are the tools used to curl hair and create the desired curl patterns. They come in various sizes and materials, such as plastic, foam, or Velcro, and influence the size and texture of the resulting curls.
    2. Perm solution: Perm solution is a chemical mixture used to alter the hair structure and lock in curls. It typically contains active ingredients such as ammonium thioglycolate or cysteine, which break and reform the disulfide bonds in the hair to create curls.
    3. Neutralizing solution: After the curls are formed, a neutralizing solution is used to stop the chemical processes and stabilize the hair structure. This solution helps to lock the newly formed curls and ensure their longevity.
    4. Protective equipment: During the perming process, it is important for both the hairdresser and the client to wear protective equipment such as gloves and aprons to avoid skin contact with the chemical solutions and to protect the hair from possible damage.

Choosing the right perm materials depends on several factors, including hair type, desired curl pattern, and the experience of the hairstylist. A professional will know exactly what they need and how to proceed.

Important: Of course, all products used should be of the best quality!

    Which materials for a perm?

A perm can be flattering for many different hair types and face shapes, but there are some factors to consider to determine if a perm is right for you.

In general, a perm can add volume and texture to people with straight or fine hair, and can help people with naturally curly or frizzy hair define and control their curls.

For people with elongated faces, permanent waves can make the face appear rounder, while people with very round, full facial contours should choose softer, loose waves to conceal the fullness of the face.

    Refresh your perm!

Over time, a perm can lose its shape and definition. However, there are different methods to refresh a perm, depending on your individual needs and hair type. For example, use curlers or a curling iron to define and shape individual curls that have lost their shape over time, or opt for a curl spray/spray to reactivate the curls and give them more definition and structure. If the curls have completely lost their shape, you can re-curl them and set them with a solution to refresh them.

It is important that you maintain and touch up your perm regularly to ensure your curls look beautiful and healthy.

An experienced hair stylist can help you choose the right method to refresh your perm and ensure your curls look perfect.

    Conclusion

The perm will definitely make a comeback among trendy hairstyles in 2024. Whether it's a light touch for naturally soft curls or an intensive solution for lasting, voluminous curls, there's something for every taste! You can even do a perm yourself, but ideally, it should be done by an experienced professional. Don't forget about targeted, comprehensive aftercare. This will give your look a unique touch, guaranteed to turn heads with healthy, natural-looking curls.
